I need help with my home theater setup with playstation 3?

I wanna add a surround sound experience to my setup, which is a playstation 3 connected to a tv with a hdmi cable. I really like the STR-DH510 receiver from Sony. My problem is that i don’t know which type of speakers i’m supposed to get(this is my first setup) for the receiver. I want to be able to have 5.1 surround sound in games and movies. I will be connecting the Ps3 to the receiver through HDMI and the tv to the receiver through HDMI. And it’d like to stay under $150. Can anyone help me and give me suggestions? I really would really appreciate it.
I have the x-540 system. Any way i can use those speakers (minus the subwoofer) and just buy the subwoofer separately?

I understand your budget,.. but you really, really don’t want to get speakers that cheap. It is nearly impossible to get 5 speakers + a sub for under $150.00 that sounds even remotely good.

I would save your money, and the cheapest I would go is the Klipsch HD 300 system. Their 500 system would be even better, but the 300 version is the lowest 5.1 model available and would suit your need wonderfully. That would run you $300-400, but would be VERY much worth the wait and money.

Think about it,.. you are purchasing 6 speakers here,..

The best product for your budget that would put out sound would be the Yamaha – NS-SP1800 series.

I can not say exactly how great this product is in many ways, but I’ll try. To begin, I have Blu-ray player (PS3), so I was looking for a surround system that was accessible and easy to use set-up, which sounded very good, and felt like a quality product. After using the system for a few days, I can tell you that most of these things meet. 

I paid the full retail price was $ 350, but again, I just wanted a surround sound system without DVD or Blu-ray player, which is what most systems these days seem increasingly popular with each BD. That means I was willing to pay more if something was a good idea. The system comes with a center speaker, two front speakers and two surround speakers for 5.1 surround sound, that’s enough to be like mine. There is also a powerful subwoofer also included, so when I get home I can really pump down. Moreover, the power is 1000 watts 

To find bit, but not much surround sound setup, this system has become ridiculously easy for me to do and leave. Each speaker has a color coded for easy installation that does not seem obvious, but this is not always the case. Then the wires connecting each speaker and then connect the receiver and the subwoofer and you’re done with the wiring, it’s really that simple. The wires are long enough for two surround speakers, so why not a problem. There is also an automatic calibration microphone that comes with a system where you have a joke to watch TV, and less than 30 seconds and the system is calibrated positions just so. 

I saw a number of Blu-ray so far and the sound is really great, really top-notch. If you never surround system, you know what you’re missing! I could never see the film without it. It is a very powerful system, goed, I wait for my neighbors something to say soon lol (that’s why it’s a night mode in the price) There are many ways you can use a Dolby Pro Logic 5.1 with ondersteuning sports games, music, etc. .. Sports touched it sounds like you listen to the third phase of the announcer, very cool stuff. 

Now there are three HDMI inputs at a price which is partly the reason why this system is more expensive than others, but well worth it. So I have a DVR receiver and PS3 in connection with a spare battery. It is good just connect the receiver that I want more than TV, I actually got my TV remote anymore. I know there is no iPod dock included, but can get $ 8 cable (red and white tips) buy and play through that, so not really worth $ 100 + Sony deal DMP. 

So if you have, great for the price of Sony, which is the link again. Ignore comments that thought it was a Blu-ray with her, I’m reviewing the Amazon, but a review of the product. 

Pros: 3 HDMI inputs, great sound, stylish, compact, easy setup, self-calibration. 
Disadvantages: the price a bit, but the quality is there 

If you do not need Blu-ray player and you do not want to deal with annoying set-up is complicated, is the system you want.

Excellent Sound for the $$

I bought mine at Costco a few weeks ago for $300 and now it’s on here for $270! Buy one now. This is a great unit for the money. Easy setup, the speakers aren’t too large and it’s nicely designed with a lot of options. I’m not going to go into all the details because other reviewers have already covered them. I actually work in sound and I am really pleased with this unit. Sony is always quality stuff. There’s more than enough power here for you. And I love that i can plug in my Iphone and play my Itunes – man, it sounds terrific.
Good for the price

Well coming from a 27 inch bulky tv with horrible sound this is quite the step up. Its very easy to set up probably an hour in total from unpacking it to post sound test with the mic calibrator. 

Its very light weight and seems to kick but the sub woofer can take so much, the 1000 watt is nice but can overload the speakers if you try to really crank it I have it in a fairly small room its full and vibrant, but I think in a living room situation a better selection may be needed. 

i have the Samsung 720p 42 inch plasma for around $500 and aPS3 for $300 and this sound system for $300 so over all Im loving a great cinematic experience for under $1200, but mind you you get what you pay for I’m sure to get the best you would have to double that figure. 

Overall a great buy for the price shipping was probably around 10 days
Excellent Home Theater System

This Home Theater system is amazing. The set up is very quick and easy. Out of the box it sounds amazing there is no need to tweek it. This unit does not contain a bluray or DVD player. It is a component home theater system. That means that it is a receiver for HD equipment you already have like a HD cable/satellite box, bluray player, PS3, XBOX360. It has 3 HDMI ports to connect your equipment and one more that goes to the TV. After everything is plugged in correctly you got to make sure your equipment is set to the proper surround sound settings. in the case of a bluray and PS3. set the audio output to Linear PCM(LPCM)though the HDMI cable, and your cable box to its proper surround sound setting(dolby digital most likely). Now your ready to experience full HD picture and sound. It is 1000W of sound and its sounds crystal clear. I tested it with Avatar and Transformers II both on bluray. Each movie sounded amazing. The front speakers and rear speakers are loud and the unpowered sub woofer is great. Some will complain that the sub is unpowered, but really it does sound and feel excellent. it will satisfy most people. If your looking for a HD home theater system and already have a bluray player this is the system to get. It will save you money verses other bluray home theaters and its more versatile with its ports
Excellent sound, but with one huge flaw.

I would have given this home theater system FIVE stars if it weren’t for one major flaw: There is an extremely loud, high frequency hiss that comes from the receiver (yes the receiver, and not the speakers). And the hiss is too loud to ignore. I noticed this immediately after setup and asked for an exchange. Amazon shipped a replacement, and I noticed it again. Will these receiver/speakers be compatible?

I thought I answered this question earlier, but I man have not hit the submit button. I’ll try it again.

The Onkyo receiver is a good, entry level receiver, but I can’t tell whether or not the Acoustic Research speakers are compatible simply because even on other web sites, the specifications for these speakers are not provided. I have no way of knowing what the wattage of the speakers are or even the speakers’ efficiency. This isn’t a surprise considering the speakers are made by Acoustic Research. They are not a very reputable company, and this is one of the many reasons why.

However, I can suggest a couple more similarly priced systems that do match that receiver in which you may be interested.

Of course the Yamaha speakers have a higher wattage threshold, but the Dayton’s have much better efficiency rating. And if you’re not sure what that means, I will explain briefly.

The Dayton’s have an SPL (Sound Pressure Level = volume) rating of “87 dB 1W/1m. This means that at the distance of 1 meter, the speaker produces 87 decibels of sound with one watt introduced.
The Yamaha speakers only produce 82 dB at the same distance with the same power. How does this effect your listening experience?

To raise the SPL (volume) of a speaker by only 3 dB (3 decibels), you have to double the power that is already being introduced into the speaker. So if you want to raise the Yamahas from 82 dB to 85 dB, you need to give it two watts of power. To raise it to 88 dB, you needs 4 watts. And 91 dB will need 8 watts. And so on.

Basically, at 64 watts of power, the Yamaha speakers will only be at 100 dB, while the Dayton speakers will be at 105 dB. While this 5 dB increase probably doesn’t seem like much, know that most humans perceive a 10 dB increase as doubling sound volume. So if a 10 dB gain is perceived as 100% more volume, then a 5 dB gain is a perceived 50% more volume.
