How do I run my laptop music through my stereo without compromising sound quality? ?

Eddie P. asked:

My laptop has all my music on it, I think about 100 gigs. I want to run my laptop through my stereo (which I paid quite a bit for) so I can hear my downloaded music etc. on my surround on my home stereo. In the past I have used connection cords that run from the headphone jack of my laptop to the RCA in’s of my stereo… this works okay but seems to diminish the sound quality quite a bit (do I need to spend the money on a better connector?). I am trying to get the best sound out of my 5:1 Surround Sound system and hate thinking that this is my only option as far as trying to hear it directly from the computer. I don’t want to have to burn all my music on CDs. There has to be a good solution out there… fire wire connection, wireless, usb connection, etc. – SOMETHING!?!? I hope I have just missed something and there is a simple solution :)

I would really appreciate anyone and everyone’s input on this. Thanks!!
